Lesson 32 - How to find modes of a melody pattern.
Lesson 32 - How to find modes of a melody pattern.
When you create a melody pattern, there is an underlying scale which needs to be discovered and then once you have the scale, you can find the modes. Doing this gives you ideas, a structure and options for your composition.
Step 1: Write down all the unique notes.
Step 2: Place the unique notes in order from lowest to highest.
Step 3: Using the lowest note as the root, find the harmonic interval formula.
Step 4: From step 2, invert the lowest note to the high position and reassign the lowest note as 1.
Step 5: Using the lowest note as the root, find the second harmonic interval formula.
Step 6: Repeat process until you have a harmonic interval formula for each note as root.
Iteration 1: G, Ab, B, C, D
1 -2 3 4 5
Iteration 2: Ab, B, C, D, G
1 -3 3 -5 7
Iteration 3: B, C, D, G, Ab
1 -2 -3 +5 6
Iteration 4: C, D, G, Ab, B
1 2 5 +5 7
Iteration 5: D, G, Ab, B, C
1 4 -5 6 -7
Play the original melody you created and then play each of the modal scales of the melody and listen to the feeling it inspires. As you continue writing your music, you might want to invoke one of the modal feelings of the original melody.
