Exercises 1 - Introduction to The Akousunesis website exercises
The Akousunesis recognises exercises are extremely useful to develop finger rigidity and independence, however exercises tend to become boring if students are unable to make the connection with their real time playing. Here at the Akousunesis school of music, we endeavour to create exercises to support melody creation to be used within your improvisations and compositions. The idea is to build a database of patterns in your head, so you may apply these patterns with your improvisations and compositions. Creating your own patterns will be the goal, which will involve listening to the interval combinations you create and assessing the emotional feeling of the pattern, because patterns are melodies and all melodies invoke emotional feelings.
Instructions on how to play finger placement exercises.
Ear note recognition, you'll listen to the exercise and try to work it out on the piano before you reveal the solution.
Interval recognition, being able to find the relative intervals quickly on the piano.
Train your hands to follow the relative pitch movement which is completely inline with what you hear, rather than trying to do an absolute note translation from sheet music, this method is going to accelerate your learning big time.
Exact finger placements save beginners time when working out the exercise.
Develop finger strength, rigidity, mobility, using finger combinations you don't exercise often.
Improves your improvisation and composition skills. As an optional bonus, you'll understand the modal placement inside key signatures in order to develop a good ear for improvisation and composition.
Easy to work out, once you understand how to locate intervals. If your theoretical knowledge is somewhat limited, you can still perform the exercises. Once you work out the finger placement, don't use the exercises as a visual crutch, you need to remember the exercise and reproduce it by looking at your fingers.
Improve your memory. Your ability to remember sequences of interval patterns is going to improve dramatically the more finger placement exercises you practice.
You'll have fun. Some exercise will be developed from famous compositions, so you're not learning a boring exercise, they'll help you learn songs.
Exercise 1
Examine interval distances on the piano. Play the C major scale naming all the intervals. Start with 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1
Finger Placement Solution
C >< RT1 RI2 RM3 RT4 RI5 RM6 RR7 RP1
C >< LP1 LR2 LM3 LI4 LT5 LM6 LI7 LT1
Exercise 2
Once you're comfortable with the intervals 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 in the key of C, practice the intervals -5 and +5.
Finger Placement Solution
C >< RT1 I2 M3 R-5 T5 I+5
C >< LP1 R2 M3 I-5 T5 I+5
Exercise 3
Practice the intervals, -3 and 3, moving back and forth several times. Always listen to the sound, take it slowly, never rush.
Finger Placement Solution
C >< RT1 I2 M-3 T3
C >< LR1 M2 I-3 T3
Exercise 4
Practice the intervals, -7 and 7, moving back and forth several times. Always listen to the sound, take it slowly, never rush.
Finger Placement Solution
C > RT1 I-3 M5 R-7 P7 <R-7 M5 I3 T1
C > LP1 M-3 T5 I-7 T7 <I-7 T5 M3 P1
Exercise 5
Practice the intervals, -2 and 2, moving back and forth several times. Always listen to the sound, take it slowly, never rush.
Finger Placement Solution
C > RT1 I-2 I2 M-3 T3 <M-3 T2 I-2 T1
C > LR1 M-2 M2 I-3 T3 <I-3 M2 R-2 R1
Exercise 6
Practice the intervals, 4 and 6, but this time, keep 5 as your reference interval knowing the 6 is a tone up from the 5 and the 4 is a tone down from the 5.
Finger Placement Solution
C > RT1 M4 <T1 >P6 <M4 T1
C > LP1 I4 <P1 >T6 <I4 P1
Left hand Exercises
C Ionian in the key of C, intervals 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Finger Placement Solution - C Ionian
C > LP1 R2 M3 <R2 >M3 I4 <M3 >I4 T5
C < LT5 <I4 M3 >I4 <M3 R2 >M3 <R2 P1
Ex 8
Finger Placement Solution - C Ionian b3
C > LP1 R2 M-3 <R2 >M-3 I4 <M-3 >I4 T5
C < LT5 I4 M-3 >I4 <M-3 R2 >M-3 <R2 P1
Introducing the concept of modal equivalence.
F Lydian b-5 in the key of C has a modal equivalence of
F Ionian in the key of F, intervals 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Ex 9
Finger Placement Solution - F Lydian b-5
F > LP1 R2 M3 <R2 >M3 I4 <M3 >I4 T5
F < LT5 I4 M3 >I4 <M3 R2 >M3 <R2 P1
Ex 10
Finger Placement Solution - F Ionian
F > LP1 R2 M3 <R2 >M3 I4 <M3 >I4 T5
F < LT5 I4 M3 >I4 <M3 R2 >M3 <R2 P1
Ex 9 and 10 are exactly the same, they are modally equivalent.
